The development of education in Suzhou has a long history.Suzhou was the first to set up a government school in the second year of Jingyou in the Northern Song Dynasty to teach students in the world.Before modern times,various academies and private schools had been established.These academies and private schools were not official educational institutions.Private schools are also started from private schools and academies.Since modern times,the traditional small-scale peasant economic model has been constantly impacted by the Western concept of capitalism.Some people of insight put forward the idea of learning advanced Western technologies and educational ideas to revitalize China for national rejuvenation.Expect to reform the local people in thought.Washing the old concept of heavy farming business.Therefore,a number of school-running groups with the purpose of “ saving the nation by industry ”began to emerge in modern times.For the country ’ s education,they invested in running schools,went to the west to study,brought back advanced ideas and teaching methods.There are some schools based on the local,constantly absorb nutrients in traditional culture,conform to the development trend of the times.Adopt an inherited attitude towards tradition,while maintaining a clear mind to deal with the development of the times.In the development of modern school buildings in Suzhou,Christian church schools have very important historical significance and discussion value.In this paper,modern Suzhou school buildings are divided into three categories :schools under the inheritance of government schools,schools under the theory of industrial salvation,and schools under Christian missionary.Representative schools with historical relics are selected as the key research objects for each category.Field research,literature collection,comparative analysis and induction are used as the main research methods.From the perspective of modernity,this paper analyzes the changes in social background,teaching funds and educational philosophy of modern school buildings in Suzhou.The research content of this paper is composed of six chapters.The first chapter is the introduction,clarifying the research objects and methods,and giving a detailed framework of the paper.The second chapter is the definition of related concepts,including the definition of modernity,and modernity in the domestic and foreign perspective of relevant research.At the same time,it describes the developmental research on modernity,and clarifies that modernity is not a defined concept,but a changing concept.Modern Suzhou ’ s school buildings and western teaching methods are the ’ modernity ’ of modern Suzhou at that time.Now we review those history to extract the elements we need,and integrate these elements into the current frontier school architectural design theory,which is the ’ modernity ’ of the moment.This paper focuses on the modern(1840-1949)between Suzhou unique ’ modernity ’.Summarize the modern characteristics of Suzhou school.Chapter three to five focuses on six representative cases to analyze the relationship between Suzhou three different types of school buildings and modernity.The selected school buildings are historical or still existing.By analyzing the explicit and implicit information of school buildings,it is concluded that Suzhou school buildings have the characteristics of inheritance and timeliness,effectiveness and juxtaposition,fracture and instantaneity.In Chapter 6,a summary analysis of Suzhou school buildings from the perspective of modernity is conducted.And some suggestions for the future modernization of Suzhou school buildings are put forward,which also provides a rich historical basis for future research.
