Research On Public Space Reconstruction Of Community With Resident Empowerment And Participation In Design

With the popularity of "people-oriented" and "user-driven" concepts,design has gradually shifted from creation activities to solve complex relationships,and the service objects of design have also expanded from single people to social groups.Participatory design was born under this historical background,conforms to the trend of the times and is considered as a design activity that can effectively promote the development of projects.Participatory design has been applied in many design fields nowadays,but domestic researches mostly use participatory design as a tool to promote project progress,and there are relatively few researches on empowering participants through participatory design.Applying participatory design to the capacity building of participants is beneficial to the individual growth of participants and the formation of group consciousness.Design serves many people,and should begin with demand and end with demand.In this thesis,an abandoned air-raid shelter space in Baishaye Street,Changsha City,Hunan Province was taken as a carrier.After on-the-spot investigation of local historical background,the designer organized "participatory design" and invited local residents to participate in the reconstruction process of the air-raid shelter,so as to build it into a polysemy public space with local characteristics and enhance community cultural identity.By the process of design participation,local residents will be changed from "bystanders" to "organizers",which will stimulate residents’ enthusiasm for participating in community life and residents’ subjective consciousness,create community self-organization form,cultivate community overall consciousness,and enhance the ability of internal independent governance and sustainable development;At the same time,in the process of design participation,by constructing the relationship between tools and roles,the participants’ creative thinking and critical reflection consciousness are cultivated.In the part of theoretical research,this thesis first discusses the relevant theories of participatory design and participants’ capacity building,introduces the common tools and design characteristics of participatory design,and analyzes the contents and methods of participants’ capacity building.Combined with the relevant cases of "participatory design" applied to the "capacity building" of participants,the functions and evaluation methods of "participatory design" are summarized.Then,the concept of "community public space",the reasons and principles of building "community public space" are further introduced.On this basis,the subject of space utilizationresidents is introduced,and the importance of cultivating "residents’ subjective consciousness" and "resident empowerment" is discussed.On the basis of integrating participatory design and the methodology of community public space creation,this paper sums up the significance of applying participatory design to community public space creation,which provides theoretical support for design practice.In the part of design practice,the "bottom-up" "participatory design" method is used to organize community residents to participate in the complete design process through five links: Project background information investigation,project introduction and capacity building,function demand and preference analysis,design output and iteration,project evaluation and reflection.The scientific evaluation framework is used to test the feasibility and effectiveness of "participatory design" applied to "resident empowerment" and "community public space creation".
