The Research On The Technical Concept Of Nicholas Grimshaw’s Architectural Creation

Since the 21 st century,the science and technology of human society has developed rapidly.It not only changes people’s life style,but also greatly enriches people’s spiritual life.As we are in the high-tech era,we can feel the impact of scientific and technological change all the time.As one of the important representatives of British "high-tech" architecture,Nicholas Grimshaw,a famous contemporary architect,has created many classic works in his architectural creation career for more than half a century with his superb architectural technology and the same imagination as artists.And in the exploration of new materials and the use of new building technology,he has made outstanding contributions.Today,his architectural works have been all over the world and won wide praise.His multi-level technical perspective is also very worthy of research and reference by contemporary architects.This paper takes the technical concepts presented in Grimshaw’s architectural creations as the research starting point,and based on the main features presented by works in different periods,taking time as the axis,divides its creative stages into early,middle and late stages.After summarizing,this paper knows that his three stages of technical trend are practical technology,artistic technology and ecological technology,and then comprehensively and systematically discusses Grimshaw’s technical perspective of architectural creation from these three levels.First of all,in Grimshaw’s early career,the functional-based practical technical perspective takes the practicality,economy and rationality of the building as the core foundation of architectural creation,which reflects a primitive form of architectural technology.He explored the various possibilities of architectural creation from three aspects: architectural form,materials and skin.In his creation,Grimshaw made structural innovations in the architectural form,through the clear expression of the architectural structure,the fine treatment of the structural and enclosure parts,and strict control of various structural nodes;Through the high adaptability of steel in architectural space and modeling design,the high plasticity of aluminum on the roof and facade,and the high permeability of planarized and curved glass,he reflected the great potential of materials in architectural creation and the rationality of material selection;He increased the decoration of the architectural surface,through emphasizing the softened skin shape,the skin style that highlights the gridding and symmetry order,and the skin color that highlights the form.Secondly,in Grimshaw’s middle career,the aesthetic-based artistic technical perspective takes the evolution from original technology to artistic technology as the core foundation of architectural creation.He combines architectural creation with the aesthetic changes of the times from three aspects: architectural technology,space aesthetics and form aesthetics.The artistic technical perspective is the development and evolution of the practical technical perspective,and there is a direct connection between the two.In his creation,Grimshaw realized the technical birth of architectural art,through the combination of structure and art,the formal beauty of various materials and the contrast of new and old materials.He expressed the technical creation of space aesthetics,through the technical control of space form,the free-flowing space and total space driven by technology,and the virtual space and gray space under the structure limitation.He expressed the technical generation of form aesthetics through the patterned and non patterned facade texture,the roof with geometric characteristics and the unique architectural form.Thirdly,in Grimshaw’s late career,the natural-based ecological technical perspective takes the sublimation of original technology to ecological technology as the core foundation of architectural creation.He explored the sustainable development of architecture from three aspects: using natural factors,using ecological technology and saving materials.In his creation,Grimshaw realizes the utilization of natural factors through bionic design of simulating animal and plant morphology,and the green design of the roof and interior.In the application of ecological technology,he uses active and passive solar energy technology to achieve the purpose of energy saving,uses glass curtain wall,special-shaped skylight,transparent dome to obtain natural light,shows respect for the local climate through the design of natural ventilation,rainwater recovery and recycled water curtain,and uses reasonable architectural form to adapt to the site topography and landform conditions,so as to create a good architectural environment.In addition,he has indirectly achieved the effect of saving materials and resources by using recyclable "light technology",movable external walls and solid panels,and adjustable indoor and outdoor installation system.In the final conclusion,this paper comprehensively and scientifically summarizes the architectural technology concepts presented by Grimshaw in architectural creation.Grimshaw’s architectural creation reflects his skillful application of architectural technology,his response to the aesthetic changes of the times,and his active exploration of ecological architectural design.Based on the relatively comprehensive,scientific and systematic research results,this paper provides new ideas,new methods and new perspectives for architectural creation in the 21 st century,and also has certain guiding significance for the architectural creation practice in China.
