| The technical and artistic problems on roofs are studied in this thesis. Concentrated on the analysis of various materials as well as the functionalities and forms of roofs, the thesis presents a detailed research on the technical features of roofs. The research on the new technologies and new concepts, the pratical instance analysis are also presented in this thesis.At first, by reviewing the origin of roofs, the evolution history of roofs both in China and in foreign countries, A conclusion is drawn that the developments of roofs has always been interactively promoted and restricted by human demand and evolving technologies. Secondly this thesis emphasizes to dissertate the technical problems and the artistic problems of roofs, the technical problems includes the roofs' form, the request from construction and design, the technical feature, the energy-saving approaches, demands of daylight, supporting configuration, the roofages and typical characters of various materials, the artistic problems includes the tropism of contemporary modeling-design of the top-part and the specific means, thus forms theoretic frames of this thesis. Then, a few new concepts on design of roofs are proposed according to sustainable development. New technologies and new materials of roofs are presented. And besides, included in this chapter are the design considerations and the applications of these new technologies based on the competition-winning project the author has participated in. finally, the thesis is concluded by summarizing the research chain of the whole thesis.
