Research Of Parking Development In Ulaanbaatar

Car parking is one of the main problems that today’s world is struggling to solve.With the car mass production,the traffic congestion problem became popular first,then as the city becomes more crowded and concentrated,parking is identified as an important problem that has negative effects on the living standard of citizens,contributing traffic congestion and polluting green environments as well.Ulaanbaatar is one of the modern urban cities that started developing parking problems since the beginning of the 2000s.Ulaanbaatar has a parking problem because it doesn’t have proper planning in the initial phase of city planning and proper parking regulation as well.The locations of Ulaanbaatar that has a serious parking problem is Central business districts.The central business district has not only high-income households that have more than one car,but also high trip attraction because of all types of organizations.Around 70% of total business and government organizations of Ulaanbaatar are located in the Central business district.But being a mono-centric city could employee shared parking structures to save cost.This thesis has estimated the parking demand of the Central Business District by using three different methods and compared the results.Out of three results,this thesis has preferred a correlational analysis model because it has multiple features and gave more realistic parking demand compared to others.According to correlation analysis projection,Ulaanbaatar would need70410 parking spaces in 2025 and 83480 parking spaces in 2030.Finally,this work suggested short-term and long-term solutions that come from theoretical sections and comparative research of Beijing,Moscow,and Ulaanbaatar.In the short-term,I have assumed that Ulaanbaatar would,still,be a mono-centric city.Thus,this thesis suggested individual parking structures that can be used as shared parking between Central business districts.Also,intensive regulation and monitoring of parking are needed in short-term solutions.As long-term solutions,this thesis offered updates of parking regulations,building parking hub spots in entry points from the outskirts,and encouraging to use more sustainable travel options.
