Research On The Genius Loci Of Public Space In The Process Of Urban Old Industrial Area Renewal

With the rapid development of economy,the old industrial zone has been unable to meet the needs of urban development,facing the fate of transformation or demolition.As an important witness of China’s urban development,the value of the old industrial zone after renewal lies more in its environmental characteristics and significance.When it is integrated with urban development,it will be more conducive to the embodiment of its value.As the space of people’s daily activities,the public space of the old industrial zone carries the historical and cultural information of the old industrial zone and different regional characteristics.With the advancement of the renewal process of the old industrial zone,it begins to assume the function of urban public space,which not only has greater openness and publicity,but also plays a certain role in promoting the continuation of urban context.Therefore,the construction of the Genius Loci of public space has a great role in the embodiment of the unique value of the old industrial zone.With the advancement of the renewal process,the homogenization of the public space in the old industrial zone begins to appear.In the renewal process,it is shackled in the thinking of solidifying the function,structure and scale,and ignores the construction of the Genius Loci with environmental characteristics and significance.Although the landscape environment has been improved,the use function is also in line with the needs of social development,However,the sense of separation between the place and the city makes the problem of space identity increasingly serious.Therefore,the research on the genius loci construction of public space in the process of the renewal of the old industrial zone plays an important role in its design practice.This paper firstly introduces the renewal model of old industrial areas,the characteristics of public space,the functional classification of the renewed space and its constituent elements.Then,the origin,characteristics and formation conditions of the Genius Loci theory are discussed in detail,and after that,the Genius Loci of public space in the process of regeneration of old industrial areas is divided into three levels: "physical environment","context" and "vitality".The three dimensions are: "physical context"analyzes the spatial components,transportation and related facilities from the perspective of the spatial composition of public space;"context" analyzes the spatial characteristics of public space.Context" analyzes the natural environment,history and culture,regional humanities and the expression of post-industrial civilization in the place from the perspective of spatial characteristics generation;"Vitality" is the embodiment of the purpose of regeneration of old industrial areas and the inner elements of public space,mainly analyzing the functions of public space in old industrial areas,events and human activities.We analyze the functions,events,and human activities of public spaces in old industrial areas.The analysis of these three aspects of the research subjects provides a theoretical basis for the previous paper and a case study for the summary of the design method in the later paper.Finally,this paper summarizes the methods for creating the spirit of place in public space in the process of regeneration of old industrial areas from three aspects: "overall planning of spatial characteristics","multiple integration of spatial composition" and "stimulation and maintenance of spatial vitality".The paper summarizes the methods for creating the spirit of place in public space in the process of regeneration of industrial areas.
