Currently, the urbanization has accelerated rapidly because of the rapid development of the economy and the growth of the population. At the same time,it is essential to focus on the increasing demand of the utility of the land.It is required to expand lands when cities are developing, but land resources are limited, leading to the contradiction between the urban expansion and the limited land resources. Also, the excessive expansion of land resources has damaged the ecological environment. Therefore,it has become a research hotspot in many fields in terms of how to carry out construction and protection reasonably. This paper is based on Hami City, analysing and summarizing the existing research on the suitability evaluation of urban construction at home and abroad, understanding related concept, theories and methods.Using GIS technology, combined with the natural and socio-economic characteristics of Hami city, the suitability evaluation index system based on"ecology-economy-society"is generated to evaluate the suitability in Hami city. Finally, the current situation and suitability evaluation results of construction land in Hami City are comprehensively superposed and analysed, and an optimization plan for land use spatial layout is attempted to make reasonable adjustments to the current construction land,so that the distribution of construction land in Hami City is more reasonable than before, which provides a scientific basis and reference for the use of land resources in Hami City and the subsequent development of lands. The research results show that:(1)In the evaluation index system for the suitability of construction land in Hami City established in this study, the weight of land resources in the evaluation is 0.331,the weight of water resources is 0.237,the weight of geological disasters is 0.148,and the weight of location dominance is 0.123.The weight of climate index is 0.088,and the minimum weight of environmental index is 0.073.(2)The suitable area of construction land in Hami City is 63465.89 km~2,responsible for 57.62%of the evaluated area. The suitable area of Balikun County is13425.49 km~2,accounting for 12.19%of the evaluated area. The suitable area of Yiwu County is 14390.14 km~2,taking up 14.59%of the evaluated area. The suitable area of Yizhou District is 35650.26 km~2,occupying 20.58%of the evaluated area. The unsuitable area is 46673.94 km~2,accounting for 42.38%of the evaluated area.Among them, the unsuitable area of Balikun County is 19465.21 km~2,representing 17.67%of the evaluated area. The unsuitable area of Yiwu County is 4541.69 km~2,taking up4.12%of the evaluated area. The unsuitable area in Yizhou District is 22667.04 km~2,accounting for 20.58%of the evaluated area.(3)After optimization, the total residential land area of Hami City is 129.66 km~2,accounting for 29.07%of the total construction land area of Hami City. After adjustment, the land for public administration and facilities covers an area of 5.88 km~2,representing 1.32%of the total construction land area of Hami City. The adjusted land area of commercial service facilities is 12.48 km~2,occupying 2.80%.The adjusted industrial and mining land area is 294.09 km~2,accounting for 65.94%of the total construction land area in Hami City, which is the largest proportion of construction land in Hami City. The land area of logistics and storage land after adjustment is 3.88 km~2,which is 0.51 km~2more than the 3.37 km~2before adjustment.
