Research On The Historical And Cultural Resources Of The Inter-Jianghuai Region

As the importance of “cultural space” protection has been increasing continuously in China’s cultural heritage conservation,the importance of spatial planning for cultural conservation has been gradually increased in China’s spatial planning system.Concentrating on the conservation of historical and cultural resources,the spatial planning for cultural conservation at provincial level requires the coordination and integration of regional cultural resources,and emphasizes the local cultural characteristics,with Historic Cities taking the leading roles.As for the inter-Jianghuai region of Jiangsu,consisting of Huai’an,Yangzhou,Yancheng,Nantong and Taizhou City,it is particularly important to research on the pattern of its historical and cultural resources,the progress of its cultural development,and ultimately establish a system of cultural awareness and conservation with regional characteristics.Surrounded by the Yangtze River,the Huaihe River,the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal,and the coastline of the Yellow Sea,the inter-Jianghuai region of Jiangsu is a relatively independent geographical unit.From the perspective of geographical environment,this study traces the evolution of the coastline of the Yellow Sea,the Huaihe River,the Yangtze River,and the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal.From the perspective of regional transportation,this study shows the close connection between water and land transportation,as well as the canal system deeply embedded in the regional developmental process.From the perspective of administrative division,this study examines how the inter-Jianghuai region of Jiangsu,with clear external boundaries,gradually eliminates its “internal boundaries” to become integrated.From the perspective of urban development,this study focuses on the development of Yangzhou and Huai’an City,as well as important historical canal towns,saltern settlements,and reclamation areas.Based on the cultural development pattern of the inter-Jianghuai region,this study identifies six important regional cultural themes,as well as the corresponding list of historical and cultural resources under each theme.After combining these resources,which have both clear cultural themes and conservation values,with the existing important cultural heritages,this study proposes the planning of cultural conservation space that is compatible with the spatial planning at provincial level,so as to fully demonstrate the key role of“cultural space” in cultural conservation.
