Historical and cultural resources, as an important part of the town, which are not only a reflection of urban socio-economic culture in the historical period, but also a space resources, are crucial to enhance the urban space nature and highlight urban characteristics. In the paper, it is focused on the small town's historical and cultural resources integration. Empirical study was carried out to obtain the method on planning and design of edge space of functional regions in small town based on historic and cultural resources integration.Due to the isolation, dispersion, lack of space cohesion for historic and cultural resources in the small town, the characteristics of edge space of functional regions in the small towns were investigated to propose a new method on planning and design, which can make the negative edge space as an active one. Then, the evaluation on the model, method and effect of the historical and cultural resource integration was performed by the research on the Jingchuan country.First of all, the "small town", "edge space of the functional regions", "historical and cultural resources integration," and other relevant concepts were defined based on spatial characteristics of historical and cultural resources in small towns in the paper. The relevant theories on planning and design of edge space of functional regions based on historic and cultural resources integration were analyzed, and the theoretical basis for interdisciplinary research was established. Secondly, the existing issues, "isolated island", "discrete" and "disorder" of historic and cultural resources under the current situation of small towns' development in China, were deeply analysed, and the problems in Jingchuan is taken as an example.Third, after analyzing the marginal, intermediary, subordination and transitional nature of the edge space, the paper presented the edge space of the functional regions played a role to combine the urban land, space and human behavior in historic and cultural resources integration and had a "edge effect". Furthermore, spatial integration strategy, which was to protect and mold the environment around resources, establish the link between resources, develop multi-order, optimize the development mode and strengthen the urban characteristics by landscape pattern, was presented considering the problems of historical and cultural resources in small towns. After the analysis of principles and objectives of the spatial integration, the integrating scopes were determined, including functional space integration, spatial self-integration, integration of history and modern space, integration of natural elements artificial elements in the space and acts of and the integration of physical space and human behaviour.Fourth, as an example of Jingchuang, the historical and cultural resources integration model and approach were studied. It was proposed that historic and cultural resources integration in small towns needed hierarchical one. The individual to the overall systemic integration was achieved by establishment of growth poles, connection the point with the axis, gradient development and historical and cultural resources network at the level of overall town. The overall integration came to being depending on the contact of growth poles based on historical and cultural resources, such as transport links, sight and the axis among functional areas. For individual resources and the environment, the resources were selected as growth pole which promoted the improvement of affiliated regions and supporting facilities. At last, a unipolar diffusion integration was developed.Fifth, the resource integration preliminary evaluation system was constructed according to the protection and optimization of the historical and cultural resources. The edge space of historical and cultural resources after spatial integration was selected as the evaluation object. The assessment contents consisted of resource protection effects, social ones, economic ones and environmental ones. Then the system was used to evaluate the analysis results of Jingchuan country. For the problems of "isolated island", "discrete" and "disorder" in less developed small towns in the western regions of China, the method on planning and design of edge space of functional regions in small town based on historic and cultural resources integration was proposed in the paper, which was the innovation of the study, and the research field of urban planning and design in the current rapid urbanization process was extended.
