Historical and cultural districts are an important part of the city’s cultural space and play an important role in showcasing the city’s landscape and passing on its culture.Nowadays,in the context of urban incremental development to stock optimisation and renewal, the protection and renewal of historical and cultural districts has also changed from the previous large demolition and construction to small-scale micro-renewal.In the process of modernisation in China, historical and cultural districts have mostly presented problems such as the destruction of architectural style, excessive commercial development and insufficient cultural heritage by placing emphasis on the protection of physical entities while neglecting the development of traditional cultural connotations. In order to better make the city’s historic districts reflect the regional characteristics, continue the historical lineage of the districts and enhance the cultural connotation of the city, find ways to protect and renew the historic districts from the perspective of cultural perception, and improve the thinking on the protection and renewal of the districts with the starting point of human feelings towards the districts.Jinan is an ancient city with a long history, beautiful natural scenery and profound cultural heritage, but under the current rapid development of the city, the conservation and renewal of Jinan’s historical and cultural districts are facing the double pressure of the development of historical districts and the preservation of traditional culture. In this study, the Furong Street-Baihuazhou Historic and Cultural Quarter and the General Temple Historic and Cultural Quarter, both of which are intact and representative of Jinan’s ancient city, are selected as objects of study, and are analysed in order to explore the future conservation and regeneration strategies of Jinan’s historic and cultural districts. This paper first analyses the fit between cultural perception and the conservation and regeneration of historical and cultural districts on the basis of domestic and international research, and summarises the main trends and shortcomings of current research.Based on field research, the specific measures taken in the conservation and regeneration of the two districts are sorted out,and their common problems under the perspective of cultural perception are summarised.Secondly, the cultural perception elements in Jinan’s urban historic and cultural districts are explored, and an evaluation system for cultural perception in Jinan’s urban historic and cultural districts is constructed from spatial physical perception, functional business perception and cultural value perception based on the specific contents of the perception elements, combined with expert consultation and literature research.Combining the SD semantic analysis method and assigning values to the evaluation indicators, the evaluation analysis of the two historic districts is carried out through questionnaires and interviews, and the results of the qualitative indicators are transformed into quantitative data to objectively assess the specific situation of each cultural perception element in Jinan’s urban historic and cultural districts. Finally,it compares the process of cultural perception, perception dimensions and their generation mechanisms in the historical and cultural districts, and proposes a strategy for the protection and renewal of Jinan’s urban historical and cultural districts from the perspective of cultural perception based on the evaluation results and research questions from three levels: optimisation of spatial physical perception, enhancement of functional business perception and activation of cultural value perception,in order to protect the historical districts as a whole and reflect humanistic care,so as to gradually strengthen the The aim is to preserve the historic districts as a whole and to reflect humanistic care,so as to gradually strengthen the cultural perception effect of the districts and effectively promote the sustainable development of Jinan’s urban historic and cultural districts.
