At present, with the urban development of our country having entered a new normal period of stock connotation optimization, the redevelopment and reuse of residential areas of old towns have become the mainstream of current residential renewal. Most of the public space in old residential areas are renewed and optimized through demolition and reconstruction.Although,to a certain extent, the quality of residential space had been improved,it has paid a heavy price for the broken residential context and the damaged urban tissue.A large number of old settlements built at the end of last century have greatly impeded the urban development of most small cities;there have been comprehensive phenomena such as declining life quality, broken cultural and historical context, disappearing social identity, diminished residential vitality, etc.Old cities have declined from the former city centers to sore points for the urban development. As a typical county-level city,Tongliang District,Chongqing City is representative for its current status of the public space of residential areas in the old cities.Taking the public space of the residential areas in the old towns of Tongliang District as the research object, this paper combines theories of urban catalyst and the micro-renewal,which has a directive function for the renovation and transformation of the residential areas in old towns.Through the research and analysis of these theories, combined with the study of the excellent cases of the public space micro-renewal of the residential area at home and abroad, this article has explored the ways of using urban catalysts in the public space design of residential areas in old city.A detailed analysis is made on the steps from catalyst selection, catalyst activation to catalyst guidance and control.Secondly, adopting the methods of field survey, interviewing and questionnaires, this research investigates and analyzes the current statues of public space of the old cities of Tongliang, and concludes the problems of space design. The catalyst point of the public space of the residential area is therefore determined based on the principles of multi-point,locality,demand priority, and integrity.Furthermore, the catalyst points are classified into different levels on the principles of priority to renewal intention and to effect. On the basis,a micro-renew design is provided for public space of residential areas of old cities of different levels in Tongliang District from three levels of residential node space, residential path space, and residential catalyst network "points, lines, and planes",and reasonable control and guidance are given. The practical design of micro-renewal of typical catalyst points makes the combination of urban catalyst theory and micro-renewal theory more realistic and concrete, which provides a reference for the activation design of catalyst points in residential public spaces. The combination and application of theses two theories not only settle the design problems of residential public space of Tongliang District but also increase public’s sense of identity and vitality of residential areas. This article innovatively applies the theory of urban catalysts into the micro-renewal of public spaces in old city residential areas, and expands and extends the renewal and transformation methods of old city residential areas. In addition to the micro-renewal design of the public space of the catalyst point in the old city of Tongliang District, this research also provides more theoretical basis and practical experience for the renewal and redesign of other such residential areas in old cities, extending the use of the urban catalyst theory and micro-renewal theory in the renewal of settlements.
