Industrial design has created a modern way of life and comfortable living environment for human beings during long history of human design. However,it accelerates the consumption of resources and energy, environmental pollution and ecological imbalance. This phenomenon makes industrial designers have to rethink the new direction of development of design. It is in this context that green design comes into being.Green design, also known as ecological design, environmental design and environmental awareness design, refers to that designers should fully consider the impact of the products on resources and environment and the function, quality, development cycle and cost of the products in the whole life cycle of the products. It is also necessary to optimize various related factors to minimize the overall negative impact on the environment of the product and its manufacturing process. The core principle of green design is “Reduce,Reuse and Recycle”,which means reduce environmental pollution and energy consumption, product and parts recycling or reuse.Green design methods include modular design and cyclic design, both of which reflect the application of "modulus" theory in the field of design. The theory of "modulus" is not a new concept, which was applied to the building of Indian Valley culture period three or four thousand years ago.fter the Industrial Revolution, the architectural design based on "modulus" theory has gradually been favored by designers. The characteristics of modular design, such as high energy efficiency and low energy consumption, are consistent with the theme of green, harmonious and sustainable development in today’s society. As a result,“modulus”theory is gradually introduced from architectural design to t product design, art design, financial industry and so on.Influenced by the "modulus" trend of thought, this paper also discusses the relation of modular design and public art.Due to professional limitations, many colleagues in this field know little about the theory of "modulus".In view of this, the first chapter of this paper gives a detailed description of the historical origin and development process for "modulus" theory, hoping to help "modulus" theory become more "universal" and popular.Chapter two discusses the dialectical relationship between "modular" theory and public art and explores the manifestation and characteristics of modular design in public art based on "modular" theory through specific cases and how the progress of public art works feeds back "modular" theory. The third chapter mainly elaborates the application innovation, social value and humanistic value of public art works based on modular design.
