Modular is the external manifestation of architecture inherent principles. It is an approach that subdivides architectures into smaller modules with different functions, which can be independently created and then assembled into an integrated one. Modular Design offers numerous benefits, such as reducing space requirement, increasing flexibility, and lowering construction cost. Through the analysis on the affecting factors of architectural design, the author proposed an effective methodology to achieve the sustainability in the Modular Design. The thesis began with the discussion on the definition of modularity and Modular Design, followed by the review of domestic and overseas cases. After that, decomposition and integration, two important processes in Modular Design, was studied. Most importantly, the author examined the affecting factors of architectural design and brought forward five principles of Modular Design. According to those affecting factors, further analyses were conducted on formation, spatial interrelationship, interface and integration of discrete modules. Finally the author investigated the generation of modular concept and corresponding technical solutions, taking the example of Xinxiang Library.
