The City of New York is the largest and richest city in the United States and one of the most influential modern cities in the world. It is recognized as the capital of the world since the United Nations headquarters is located here.As a representative of modern metropolises,New York City has great influences on the world’s business, politics, media, science and technology for more than a century.Therefore,after1990s’ s Neighborhood revitalization projects funded by the city and state,New York City has become a formwork for global cities’ urban planning blueprint.City is a symbol of modern civilization and social progress, and a synthesis of policy, economy and culture. As a typical existing form of modern social community, city is like a mirror, reflecting the characteristics of a society.Since the 1990s’ s Neighborhood revitalization projects completed in the 1990,New York City’s urban planning has not changed much. But its current urban space is actually a result of capital control and capital is the internal logic of its public space and private space, material space and spiritual space. Therefore, based on Urban Space Critique, this thesis analyzes current situation of New York City’s urban space, aiming to argue capital’s manipulation of New York City’s urban space, and thereby indicates the truth of New York City’s urban space that it is designed to serve the interests of the rich class and cannot meet the pursuit of most New Yorkers’ self-realization.The main body of this thesis contains three chapters. The first chapter, from the perspective of public space and natural resources, mainly expounds the deprivation of New York City’s urban space, including the private possession of high-quality public space and the monopoly of natural resources by capital. The second chapter, from the perspective of spiritual space and material space, analyzes the alienation of New York City’s urban space, including interaction between and prevalence of fetishism and profit orientation of shopping Malls, and the loss of community sense and the justice deficiency of living houses. The third chapter, from the perspective of class consolidation, points out that the excellent educational resources are exclusively enjoyed by the rich class but most of the recreation spaces are public of the poor class.
