In today’s world, major changes unseen in a century are accelerating, and our country is in a critical period of realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. With the vigorous development of Chinese economy,high-speed rail has become a "Chinese symbol",and its development has strengthened the country’s power, safeguarded and improved people’s livelihood. In the context of promoting the high-quality economic development of our country, the trend of creating regional coordinated development continues to increase. The urban agglomeration in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River connects the east to the west and connects the south to the north. It is an important part of the Yangtze River Economic Belt and also implements the strategy of promoting the rise of the central region. The key areas for deepening reform and opening up in an all-round way and promoting new-type urbanization occupies an important position in my country’s regional development pattern. In view of the strategic value of high-speed railways to regional economic development, this article focuses on the analysis of the impact of the opening of high-speed railways on cities in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River.Based on the in-depth research and study of the existing literature, combing the related theories of transportation economic belt,point-axis system, transportation location theory, growth pole, etc.,this article uses the double difference model to analyze the impact of the opening of high-speed railways on urban economic development.Regarding the opening of high-speed rail as a natural experiment,52prefecture-level cities in the region as the research area, quantitative analysis based on panel data from 2004 to 2019,with cities with high-speed rail as the implementation group, and cities without high-speed rail as the control Group, establish a two-way fixed effect double difference model.Measure the impact of high-speed rail on regional economic development from the three aspects of actual GDP,industrial structure indicators, and GDP growth rate, and analyze the differences in the policy treatment effects of cities in different geographic locations and cities with different population sizes in the region before and after the opening of high-speed rail Finally,in order to verify the robustness of the model results,a placebo test of the delay period data is carried out,so as to provide certain suggestions for the construction of the high-speed rail network of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River and the regional economic development of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. The study found that the opening of high-speed rail will increase the real GDP level of the region to a certain extent, but it will reduce the real GDP growth rate. The opening of high-speed rail can promote the growth of regional economic aggregate by promoting the optimization and upgrading of industrial structure. The effects of high-speed rail show differences in the city types with different geographic locations and different population sizes in the city clusters in this area.Compared with regional core cities,non-core cities in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River urban agglomeration have enjoyed more high-speed rail dividends.High-speed rail has a certain negative impact on the economic development of small cities, but it brings more resources such as labor and capital to large and medium-sized cities.Based on the conclusions of empirical research and the problems of the urban agglomeration in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River.(1)Scientifically plan the high-speed rail network, establish and improve supporting facilities;(2)Optimize the design of the industrial structure, and form industrial dislocation development;(3)Give full play to the core cities Role to promote coordinated regional development. The innovation of this article lies in: First, the research area is positioned to the city clusters in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, and the regional economic development at the meso level is investigated.Secondly,in the empirical analysis,in order to more accurately fit the data status of high-speed rail openings in cities in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River,a double-difference model was used, and a placebo test of the delay period data was performed.
