This paper explores deeply about architectural thinking by designing the proposed main building of a Tibetan Buddhist Institute in Lixian County. The design scheme has three key conditions: first, the location of the Buddhist Institute is close to the local historical cultural landmark-the relics of Lixian Tibetan Stupa;second, the Buddhist Institute emphasizes the monumentality of the main building in order to meet the spiritual needs rather than the daily teaching and living functions;third, the main building should learn from Lixian Tibetan Stupa instead of copying its appearance.Taking the design scheme as an opportunity, this paper aims to solve how to reflect the monumentality of traditional Tibetan architecture in the creation of modern architecture. The paper discusses the following two aspects: On one hand, taking Lixian Tibetan Stupa as the source, the author tries to study its history and current site for extracting historical prototype. On the other hand, the author tries to translate the historical prototype into the new main building.Three spatially memorial elements of the Stupa are extracted:the centripetal layout, the circular path and the super-scale volume, which together constitute the spatial prototype of the Stupa. Then, the design methods of the above three elements were enriched by referring to the cases of modern architects such as Louis Kahn, including multi-axial centripetal layout, reconstruction of detour path and super-scale core space,so as to reflect the spatial monumentality in the new main building. To sum up,the monumentality of traditional architecture can be better developed in the new architecture by extracting historical prototypes and combining them with modern Tibetan architecture. It provides the methodology for designing new Tibetan architecture in the future, and makes a valuable practice to reflect traditional architectural characteristics and monumentality in modern architecture.
