In recent years, the research on the evaluation of habitat environmental quality in ancient towns has gradually increased, but in the process of research,it lacks classification and pertinence. One of them is the living environment of the ancient towns along the Grand Canal. With the success of China’s Grand Canal in 2014,the habitat environmental quality of the ancient towns along the Grand Canal has received widespread attention. However,in the study of the human settlement environment of the ancient towns along the Grand Canal, there is no close connection between the ancient towns and the Grand Canal. The data and conclusions obtained are not pertinent and representative.Based on the above status quo, this article strives to be able to consider the relevant elements of the Grand Canal in the context of the cultural heritage of the Grand Canal, integrate the Grand Canal with the residential environment of the ancient town, and establish a scientific assessment of the environmental quality of the ancient town of Suzhou in the Grand Canal. The system can provide an effective way to directly improve human settlements for the ancient towns in the Suzhou section of the Grand Canal, and it can also provide a reference for the ancient towns along the other sections of the Grand Canal.First of all,the preliminary selection of evaluation indicators was conducted by studying the research status of the cultural heritage of the Grand Canal, the environmental quality of human settlements, and the environmental quality of human settlements in ancient towns along the Grand Canal, combined with literature, research results, and relevant laws and regulations.Secondly, the indicators were optimized through correlation analysis, and the final indicator set was determined; Then, the indicators were weighted by the analytic hierarchy process to obtain a complete evaluation index system. Finally, the representative ancient towns were selected: Pingwang Town,a representative town passing by the Grand Canal, and Shengze Town,a representative town adjacent to the Grand Canal, and analyzed using the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method.Research result:(1)The weighting results show that ecological environment and living environment are the two most important factors affecting the quality of human settlements in the ancient town of the Suzhou Grand Canal.(2)The evaluation and analysis results show that people are more satisfied with the quality of the human settlement environment in the ancient town of Suzhou section of the Grand Canal, and the overall level is above the middle level, but the two types of ancient towns are slightly different in terms of canal noise and other factors. In addition, there are also some indicators that people are not very satisfied with it and are at a moderately low level, for example, the protection of the cultural heritage of the canal is relatively inadequate.Aiming at these problems, countermeasures are proposed from the aspects of system, management, publicity, and co-governance to improve the quality of human settlements.
