During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the Jin and Shaanxi merchants were two powerful merchant groups, and for a long time, they were called "Western merchants" or "Shan-Shaan merchants" because they often joined together.Along with the footprints of Shan-Shaan merchants throughout the country,a magnificent and exquisite Shan-Shaan guild hall also stood up in various places. The Luoyang Shan-Shaanxi Association Hall, which is the most complete surviving hall in western Henan,is a witness to this history.Located near the South Pass of Luoyang City, the hall is large in scale, rigid in layout, elaborate in decoration, and of great cultural value and artistic character.Based on a review of relevant literature and field research, this paper focuses on the architectural art of the Luoyang Shan-Shaanxi Hall from the perspective of regional cultural studies, especially the decorative art of wood and stone carvings, couplets and interior and exterior colors,in order to show the artistic charm and cultural significance of the hall.To this end, this paper discusses four aspects.Firstly,a comprehensive review of relevant studies in the academic field is conducted to point out their achievements and identify their shortcomings,so as to lay the foundation for determining the focus of this paper. In addition, using relevant historical documents and inscriptions in the hall,we explain and introduce the founding, history, and current status of the Luoyang Shan-Shaanxi Association Hall in order to clarify the composition of the existing buildings, the value of cultural relics, and the focus of this paper.Second, this paper discusses the composition of the architectural art of the Luoyang Shan-Shaan Association Hall from two aspects. One is the spatial layout of the building.Through the identification and differentiation of the functions of the precursor area, the theater viewing area, and the god worshiping area of the Luoyang Shan-Shaan Association Hall,it can be seen that the hall not only imitates the basic form of temple architecture, but also forms a courtyard-based courtyard layout and the architectural technique of seeing the large in the small,in other words, the hall actually has the combination characteristics of "commerce+temple+residential".Secondly, the decorative art of the Luoyang Shan-Shaan Association Hall brings together the common elements of the architectural decorative art of Shan-Shaan Association halls across the country, such as the themes of praying for blessings and seeking wealth and the belief in Guan Gong, etc. On the other hand,it also cleverly integrates the cultural elements of the hometown of Shan-Shaan merchants and the local culture of Luoyang, such as the decorative techniques of the arch and the extensive application of peony elements, which manifests the exchange and integration of the regional culture and art of the three places. In view of this, this paper concludes that as a cultural relic of the economic activities of Shan-Shaan merchants in the Ming and Qing dynasties, the architectural art of the Luoyang Shan-Shaan Association Hall is unique and rich in cultural connotation, and is worthy of being cherished and protected.
