The development history of world railways proves that high-speed railways are an inevitable trend for a country’s economic and social development to achieve leaps and bounds.As the first domestic high-speed railway with a design speed of 350 kilometers per hour,the Beijing-Tianjin Intercity Railway was opened on August 1,2008,and in the 11 years of stable operation,it has not only experienced the miracle of China’s high-speed railway from 0 to 35,000 kilometers The rapid growth also witnessed the rapid development of China’s economy.With the advancement of high-speed rail construction,the population,the flow rate of resources,and the economic development situation along the high-speed rail,especially the high-speed rail hub cities,have undergone tremendous changes.The imbalance of urban development in China makes the impact of high-speed rail appear two-sided: on the one hand,high-speed rail brings a continuous stream of production factors for better-developed large and medium-sized cities to make it better;on the other hand,it exacerbates the poor development The loss of urban resources in small and medium-sized cities and towns has brought a negative impact on regional development.As an important way to promote the development of China’s cities,the quality of urbanization is crucial.Exploring the direct effects and differences of high-speed rail construction on the quality of urbanization is of great significance for China to promote the construction of new urbanization and the balanced development of cities.This paper first conducts related theoretical researches such as growth pole theory,supply and demand theory,and transportation development theory.Based on the reading of the literature,from the four aspects of population,economic development,social livelihood,and urban construction,the annual data of 16 indicators of 46 cities along the “Beijing-Guangzhou High-speed Railway Wuhan-Guangzhou Section” were selected as the comprehensive evaluation indicators for the quality of urbanization.The original data of the system,using the entropy method to calculate the comprehensive index of the quality of urbanization development of each city,the results show that there are large differences in the quality of urbanization development of the cities along the Wuhan-Guangzhou section of the Beijing-Guangzhou high-speed railway from 2005 to 2017.Among them,the quality of urbanization development in most areas where high-speed rail is opened is higher than that in non-opened areas,but there are also unsatisfactory urbanization developments in some areas where high-speed rail is opened.In order to further study the impact of high-speed rail construction on the development of urbanization,this article takes the comprehensive score index of urbanization quality as the explanatory variable,and uses 2010 as the time-cutting point for the opening of the high-speed rail.The selection of the sample takes the high-speed rail opening time and regional interaction terms as virtual variables,and also introduces per capita GDP,the proportion of GDP in the secondary and tertiary industries,the amount of fixed asset investment,and the amount of local public finance expenditure as control variables.The sample and different city grade samples were subjected to basic regression analysis,and further dynamic regression and stationarity tests were performed on the overall sample.Finally,the following conclusions were reached:(1)On the whole,high-speed rail has a significant inhibitory effect on the quality of urbanization development along the cities.However,under the long-term effect,this inhibitory effect is decreasing,and it is developing in a favorable direction.(2)From a regional perspective,high-speed rail has a greater negative impact on areas with large differences in urbanization quality development.The specific effect is that the negative effect on the quality of urbanization in Guangdong Province in the eastern region is larger than that in Hubei Province,Hunan Province in the central region.(3)From the perspective of city level,high-speed rail also has a significant negative effect on the development of urbanization quality in third-,fourth-,and fifth-tier cities with little difference.Finally,based on the results of the above research,this article puts forward relevant suggestions on the coordinated development of high-speed rail and urbanization construction from the following four aspects,including: first,rational planning of high-speed rail lines to accelerate regional integrated development;The construction of express transportation system promotes structural reforms on the supply side of transportation;third,the use of high-speed rail to guide urban expansion and optimize the urban spatial layout;fourth,the use of local industrial characteristics to enhance urban competitiveness.
