Research On Toyo Ito’s New Dom-Ino System

The Dom-Ino System proposed by Le Corbusier has been transformed into reinforced concrete frame structure in the rapid popularization and development of modernism in pursuit of structural rationality and functionalism.This not only makes the Dom-Ino System,the architectural symbolic system,lose its original significance as prototype,but also makes the architectural space standardized in the world.The Contemporary architecture is facing the hinderences from modernism,the study of Ito Toyo’s new Dom-Ino system can not only help to understand the development of contemporary Japanese Architecture represented by Toyo Ito,but also find posibilities of architecture beyond Modernism,through exploring new expressions and revealing the infinite possibilities contained in th is system.The main research contents in this paper contains four parts:firstly,taking the development of architectural typology as the basic framework,corresponding and revealing three stages of the historical development of the New Dom-Ino System,clarifying some background knowledge about Dom-Ino System,making clear the hallmark of the New Dom-Ino System,as well as its historical and social background.Secondly,this paper Studied the originality and development of Toyo Ito’s architectural concepts in specific historical and social background,and the reveals Toyo Ito’s architectural concepts characterised in the New Dom-Ino System.Then,it summarrised the innovative types of column,floor,stair and grid system embodied in New Dom-Ino System,by comparation with the Dom-Ino System.Finally,it also suppled the new breakthrough of the system proposed by Toyo Ito,and the innovations further developed and inherited by architects afterward.The creative achievements and practical significance of this paper are as follows:1.By discussing the development process of the new domino system,clearifies that the system is belong to the "third type",and origined from the "model type".2.Based on the era and social background,this paper analyzes the relationship between the design concept of Toyo Ito and his New Dom-Ino System.(concepts include: Beyond modernism,Assimilation with nature,Fluidity,Homogeneity and Ephemeral.)3.Though analysising cases,It summarized three typical expressions columns in the system,the ways of floor fusion and forms of natural expression,the muti-expressions of stairs,and four typical types of grid system.4.This paper also analyzes the inheritance presented by architects like Kazuyo Sejima in expressions of the basic components and the space framework.The main conclusions are as follows:Under the influence of Traditional Culture,Information Era and Post-modernism Architecture,Toyo Ito innovated and developed the New Dom-Ino system on the basis of the Architectural Prototype and Design Concepts of modernism Architects like Corbusier,Mies and Louis Kahn.He breaks the solidified meaning of system components,and created various new types of expressions in each constituent elements.At the same time,the system is in the process of continuous development and expansion,and had its influences on other architects.
