Living on the water is the basic nature of human beings, and because the pier is located at the junction of land and water,it undertakes the function of transportation. It is not only an important spatial node for a town to establish contact with the outside world, but also an important place for people’s daily life and production.Chongqing is a typical mountain city that rises due to water, and its waterfront space has the characteristics of mountain and water culture.Among them, the pier as a characteristic element has either disappeared or adapted to the transformation with the development of the city. Therefore, grasping the status of pier landscape style through basic research and clarifying the contradiction between it and urban construction is of great theoretical value and practical significance for Chongqing to build a beautiful place with beautiful scenery and complete the transformation and development of the waterfront area. This article takes the piers along the Yangtze River and Jialing River in Chongqing as the key research objects, and summarizes the historical context of the pier and the components of the pier’s landscape and features through literature research, summary and other methods.A lot of basic investigations were carried out on the elements, status, accessibility and surrounding formats of the pier along the river in the main urban area of Chongqing by means of field investigation and interview investigation.Analyzed the current situation of the style of the pier along the river from the aspects of economy, culture and landscape. The principles and objectives of updating the landscape features of the pier are clarified, and the corresponding updating modes and paths are formed. On this basis, the preliminary strategies and methods for updating the landscape features of the pier are summarized and proposed. The main research conclusions of this article are as follows:(1)The transformation process of the pier can be roughly divided into five stages: generation stage, development stage, prosperity stage, transformation stage and port construction. The four main factors affecting the evolution of the pier are location factors, economic factors, policy factors and technical factors. The landscape of the pier is composed of significant elements and potential elements. The obvious elements mainly include five aspects: hydrology and landform, shoreline form, connecting path, structure and dock facilities, and the potential elements derived from this include transportation culture, trade and catering culture, gang club culture and human architectural culture.(2)The current status of the Chongqing pier includes three aspects: First, the separation of the pier from the urban functional space and the weak physical connection with the city hinterland have caused the economic value of the pier not to be fully tapped.Secondly, the islandization of pier space, the lack of hydrophilic revetments, and the destruction of natural environmental factors have caused a decline in the quality of the pier ’s landscape environment. Finally, the disappearance of cultural material carriers, the homogenization of expressions, and the lack of innovative application of factors have caused the lack of manifestation of the historical context of the pier.(3)In view of the status questions, four principles and objectives for the renewal of the pier in the main urban area of Chongqing are proposed, which are holistic, regional, hydrophilic and ecological. At the same time, this article summarizes the update mode and path from three aspects: function combination, environment improvement and cultural heritage. Finally, the strategy and method of pier updating are proposed from four aspects: the integration of urban space, the improvement of transportation system, the construction of hydrophilic space and the continuation of historical context.
