In recent years, climate warming has attracted the attention of all walks of life in the world. At present,China is the largest energy consumer. In line with the principle of a responsible country, the Chinese government has been actively formulating emission reduction targets and fulfilling the responsibility of emission reduction. However, the factors affecting carbon emissions and the measures to be taken have always been the focus of scholars’ research. As the first driving force of China’s development,R & D innovation plays an important role in promoting green development, while the three major urban agglomerations of Pearl River Delta,Yangtze River Delta and Beijing Tianjin Hebei have a high proportion of input and output in R & D innovation, playing a key role in coping with climate change, and studying the impact of R & D innovation on carbon emissions in the three urban agglomerations Construction and sustainable development have important theoretical value and guiding significance. This paper uses panel data from the Pearl River Delta, the Yangtze River Delta, and the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration between 2003 and 2017,and first uses the DEA method and the entropy method to construct R & D innovation performance and R& D innovation scale indicators respectively. After that, the carbon emissions of each of the three major urban agglomerations were measured based on the IPCC method, and the spatial patterns of the three major urban agglomerations were analyzed and compared. Then use spatial econometric model to explore the carbon emission influencing factors and spillovers of China’s major urban agglomerations. Finally, the related comparative analysis results are used to put forward relevant countermeasures and suggestions for the green construction of China’s urban agglomerations. The results show that:(1)the carbon emission of Pearl River Delta,Yangtze River Delta and Beijing Tianjin Hebei Urban agglomeration has spillover effect. The carbon emission of the Pearl River Delta and the Yangtze River Delta shows the diffusion effect, while that of the Beijing Tianjin Hebei region shows the polarization effect.(2)R & D innovation performance has a negative impact on regional carbon emissions, and the negative impact of R & D innovation performance on carbon emissions gradually decreases with the increase of performance.(3)The scale of R & D innovation has a positive impact on Interregional carbon emissions, and the positive impact of R & D innovation on carbon emissions gradually decreases with the expansion of the scale.(4)The reduction of energy consumption per unit of GDP and the increase of the proportion of tertiary industry can reduce carbon emissions, while the impact of population, economic growth and the degree of opening-up on carbon emissions is related to population quality, economic growth mode and the quality of opening-up.
