The energy consumption mode based on fossil energy has driven global economic development and improved human living conditions, but it has also led to serious environmental and climate deterioration.Because of the increasingly severe environmental and resource crises,it is imperative to promote the coordinated development of the environment and economy to build a low-carbon society.Under this situation,China’s low-carbon development is urgent. In order to achieve lowcarbon development,it is necessary to have a deep understanding of the low-carbon behaviors of residents, encourage and support residents to live a low-carbon life, and make low-carbon behaviors become the responsibility and habit of every resident. Therefore, the formation of low-carbon behavior and the guidance of low-carbon behavior of residents play a vital role in the development of low-carbon society and even low-carbon countries.Based on the Theory of Planned Behavior, the Model of Responsible Environmental Behavior, and the Value Belief Norm Theory, this study explored the factors that influence individuals’ low-carbon behavior and the variations between different groups.A questionnaire measuring seven dimensions(including low-carbon awareness,low-carbon knowledge, personal norms, social norms, situational factors, private low-carbon behavior, and public low-carbon behavior)was distributed to the residents of Tianjin, yielding 418 valid responses. The results indicated that the lowcarbon behavior of residents is affected by social norms, personal norms and situational factors.Social norms and personal norms have a positive impact on low-carbon behavior of residents, while situational factors have a negative impact.Second, residents’ Low-carbon awareness and low-carbon knowledge affect their low-carbon behavior through personal norms;third, social norms, personal norms, and situational factors have a stronger impact on public low-carbon behavior than private low-carbon behavior;and fourth, compared with male groups, personal norms of women have a more significant impact on low-carbon behavior;compared with the middle-aged and older groups, the public low-carbon behavior of young people is more affected by social norms;compared with rural residents, the influence of personal norms on low-carbon behavior of urban residents is more significant. This research has significant potential for guiding residents’ low-carbon behavior and improving low-carbon management. |
