Research On The Expression Of Material Language In "Wearable Art"

With the development of society and the advancement of the times,new materials and new technologies have constantly emerged in large numbers with interdisciplinary integration.In addition,with the improvement of people’s aesthetic awareness,they have diversified requirements for fashion,and tend to prefer individualized expression.In the context of interdisciplinary integration,it is essential for fashion design,a designrelated major,to find more possibilities for future development based on its own characteristicsThis paper took the “wearable art” as the breakthrough point to deeply explore and analyze fashion art design of clothing,and conducted studies as well as design creations with materials,aiming to explore the enlightenment provided by material language expression for the approach of contemporary fashion design.Fashion design can be classified into traditional practical design and innovative art design.The “wearable art”mentioned in this paper belongs to innovative art design,which attaches more importance to expression of thoughts,the application of materials and visual creativity of costume art,compared with traditional practical design,in other words,it regards costume as a work of art,breaks through the traditional clothing’s dependence on pattern in terms of profile,chooses diversified materials that enable the design to have rich material language expression and cultural connotation,and lays more emphasis on the concept expression and unique visual effects in the works.Mainly focusing on the expression of material language in “wearable art”,this paper consists of five chapters.Chapter one analyzed the research background and the current status at home and abroad,demonstrated that“wearable art” is the research direction of costume art that follows the current development trend of art,and determined the research approach with materials as the breakthrough point.This research is of certain guidance significance for the establishment of material database and practical techniques of creation.Chapter two expounded the concept of “wearable art”,followed by the description of its characteristics from three perspectives of thoughts and ideas,modeling language and processing technology,and analyzed the advantages of making use of expressive material language in the artistic practice and creation based on practical cases.In chapter three,experiments with six kinds of materials including nylon cable ties,plastic bag,toilet paper,density fiberboard,touch LED light and specular LED light were carried out,which can be divided into three experimental categories including materials that can be woven,materials that can be modelled,and material that can be illuminated,aiming to explore its texture performance and modeling process from different aspects.Chapter four is about various fashion design practices with feasible creation methods on the basis of the above-mentioned experiments of materials.A total of eight works,including Net series,Colors,Plastic Paper,Breathing Cells,Light,and Through Body,were used to display the rich material language.The conclusion briefly stated the artistic value and social value of this research,summarized the deficiencies of the research,and expressed the expectations of the prospect of contemporary fashion art design.The research on the selection of materials,expression of thoughts,reengineering process and clothing modeling modes of “wearable art”,as tentative attempts based on personal observation and ideas,is still in the stage of research and exploration.Whether the diversified and stylized material language in “wearable art” as well as its application can provide new creation approaches for fashion art design still needs further theoretical analysis and design demonstration.
