Research On Genderless Clothing Design

With the progress of social system and people’ s requirements for diversified aesthetics,the genderless clothing has undergone an unprecedented period of rapid development.After referring to the research on “gender free” and “genderless clothing”at home and abroad,the paper gives a more comprehensive definition of genderless clothing,i.e.the genderless clothing refers to clothing that could be worn by men,women or any other gender,it is neither for a specific gender nor for people of a certain gender,which transcends gender norms of clothing via ways to weaken,eliminate,or subvert gender temperament and is committed to break the cliché of gender and the thinking mode of binary opposition,and pursues diversified and inclusive aesthetic fashion.Under the influence of feminist movement,women have a more and more free way to dress.For men,the dress code for them in contemporary society is still strict.Hence,designers of genderless fashion use the design form of contemporary “men”wearing “feminine” clothing to break the gender cliché,which has become the hot topic of fashion in recent years.It is worth mentioning that this kind of design form not only targets on men or a specific group,but also to express the diversified “gender free”design concept by using this more intuitive,breaking-through gender dress code and aesthetic cognition of visual presentation.The author respectively studies different types of genderless clothing,and comprehensively studies the reasons for the emergence of genderless clothing,the current situation of the brand,the characteristics of the elements,the means of expression,the design principles and the future prospects.The following conclusions can be drawn from this paper:1.From the concept of gender-neutral clothing,we can conclude that genderneutral clothing actually has no fixed standard.It is more like conceptual and experimental clothing with the uncertainty and complexity of gender.The design purpose of gender-neutral clothing is not only to follow the existing gender aesthetic standards.Instead,it aims to break the traditional and preconceived idea by presenting the public more diversified sense of beauty of the clothing.2.From the perspective of the design elements of genderless clothing.Different visual types of genderless clothing have different ways of expression.The genderless clothing that blurs the gender quality pursues practicality and comfort,the genderless clothing that subverts feminism attaches the style of strong and capable masculinity,while the genderless clothing that subverts masculinity pursues complicated decoration and soft visual experience.3.From the perspective of the design principles of genderless clothing.Based on the feminist scholars’ research on gender issues,the author comes to three principles of genderless fashion design,that is the principle of difference,the principle of inclusiveness and the principle of anti-binary opposition.4.Based on the social psychology of clothing cognitive point of view,symbolic interaction theory point of view and cultural point of view,the paper makes a detailed analysis of the genderless clothing.First of all,the guiding role of gender instability and lesbian,gay,bisexual & transgender(LGBT)is the cause of the emergence and popularity of genderless clothing;secondly,the author points out that modern designers promote the development of genderless clothing into the current condition in order to create a public image in line with social expectations,or to blur the traditional gender appearance symbols and create novel appearance stimulation;finally,according to the change of technology,social structure and ideology,the author looks forward to the development trend of genderless clothing.It is concluded that the genderless clothing has great development potential.
