Research On Gender Ambiguity In Modern Fashion

The ancient Chinese idiom “a stone from another mountain can attack jade” contains the simple idea of interdisciplinary study.Over the years,the fashion industry has always stressed that “fashion should be combined with science and art.”.Up to now,this kind of interdisciplinary research method has been paid more attention to by the researchers in the academic circles.The Androgyny theory was first proposed by Virginia Woolf,the British Feminist Writer,in the1920 s,and has been mainly applied to the study of literature since its inception.But the simple idea of androgyny embodied in the western theory of Androgyny is similar to the idea of Yin-Yang Harmony pursued by Chinese traditional culture.Inspired by the Androgyny theory,this paper provides a fresh way of thinking by employing the androgyny theory for the study of gender ambiguity in the modern fashion world.Under the guidance of Androgyny theory,a related study is conducted over the“Phenomenon of gender ambiguity in modern fashion” through the method of literature and case analysis.Firstly,the research status of gender ambiguity and Androgyny in fashion is summarized,and then the relationship between fashion and gender and the performance characteristics of gender and Androgyny in modern fashion are analyzed.Finally,this paper focuses on the study of the popular causes of gender ambiguity in modern fashion,combining the western theory of Androgyny with the idea of Yin-Yang Harmony in Chinese traditional culture,from the social,cultural and individual perspectives,this paper probes into the reasons for its popularity,and the way to view the popularity of gender ambiguity in modern fashion in the context of Chinese traditional harmonious culture.The research founds that there is a widespread fashion phenomenon of gender ambiguity all over the world with diversified forms of expression in different regions and cultures.What’s more,the gender ambiguity in modern fashion is a positive response to the pursuit of the Harmony of Yin and Yang in traditional Chinese culture.Men and women can absorb and integrate each other’s strengths,in order to achieve a harmonious perfect personality.The research of this paper is helpful to enrich the studies over gender ambiguity in fashion field,and improve the public’s acceptance and tolerance of gender ambiguity in fashion,so as to display its vitality.
