Clan culture can be said to occupy an important position in Chinese native culture, and the culture will have a subtle influence on all aspects of people’s lives. Then this article begins with a study of the relationship between clan culture and family economic behavior——family borrowing. This article uses the 2014 China Family Tracking Survey data released by Peking University to demonstrate the relationship between clan culture and family lending in detail through the data and the existing theoretical basis, comparing the similarities between urban household borrowing and rural household borrowing behavior. In terms of sources of household borrowings, the preferences and reasons of households in different regions for private and formal borrowings are explored. This paper first makes a descriptive statistical comparative analysis of the data, and then uses the Logit model to systematically analyze the influence and mechanism of clan culture on household borrowing. The article divides the factors that affect family lending from three levels:(1)at the individual level, the members who are most familiar with financial-related issues in each household are used as the individual representatives who influence the family lending behavior, and statistics are related to their gender, age, education, and other related data;(2)At the household level, the number of family members was selected. The income and expenditure of the family in the past 12 months, the mortgages repaid in the past 12 months, the interest on private loans, the gift of personal gifts in the past 12 months, financial assistance to relatives, and the preferred borrowing target. These indicators are used as explanatory variables.(3)At the community level, the article attempts to measure the clan culture based on three aspects: the nature of the community in which the sample is located, the number of large surnames in the community, and whether the community has a clan temple.More in-depth,this paper uses the source of private borrowing debt as a percentage of total household debt to measure the impact of clan culture on household borrowing. The empirical results show that clan culture has a positive effect on family private borrowing. The research results show that the proportion of households with borrowing behavior in the sample is low in all surveyed households, less than one-third of the total.Among them, rural households are more likely to generate borrowing behavior than urban households. The proportion of households borrowing from relatives and private institutions is much higher than that of urban households. The clan culture-related explanatory variables of the nature of the family in which the family is located, personal gift expenditure, preferred borrowing objects, and the number of large surnames in the family where the family is located are strongly related to family lending behavior. In addition, the number of large family names in the community and whether there are clan ancestral halls in the community have a significant positive impact on folk lending, which shows that clan culture has a promoting effect on folk lending, but it has a certain inhibiting effect on formal lending. The purpose of this article is to study the influence of clan culture on clan borrowing, deepen the research on the role of clan culture through the proportion of private borrowing to household debt, and explore the similarities and differences between town and rural household borrowing and behavior preferences. The sociological concept of clan culture is very complicated, and it is difficult to describe its rich connotation with only one or two indicators. |
