Abstract/Summary:
The product of an art dealer's measured resources and an artist's creative vision, the exhibition catalogue has become an object at the nexus of art and commerce -- much like the very artwork it documents. However, the justification of what is often a very resource-intensive activity must be questioned in context of the overall marketing schema of art galleries. An investigation of these questions might yield not only the rationale behind the publishing of catalogues, but also the rationale behind their being in print. The study refers back not only to the prolific history of printing exhibition catalogues, but also to the changing formats of these publications and their implications.
