Abstract/Summary:
This qualitative study is an examination of the possible impact of two community-based art programs on the positive development of urban 14-18 year olds considered at-risk. Phenomenological methods were used and the data analyzed, through three frameworks: arts-based service learning, resiliency theory and Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR). Analytic induction through triangulation of three data collection methods: direct observation, researcher-active participation, and structured and unstructured interviewing was used to uncover which of the positive outcome factors of each framework were present in each program and where overlap if any occurred. In those instances where factors from each framework overlapped in each program, these similarities in processes, structures, and outcomes were considered significant to the success of the program and a possible contributor to self-efficacy and positive development in the teen participants.
