Abstract/Summary:
The propagation of Terahertz (THz) pulses in the atmosphere have been investigated for distances of 170 m and longer, up to 20 Km. The main objective of this thesis is to characterize THz communication channels for wireless communication at frequencies below 1 THz. For this purpose, first specific absorption model for the main atmospheric gases such as oxygen and water vapor were investigated, with respect to absorption of electromagnetic radiation in the sub-terahertz frequency range 0.05-1 THz. Atmospheric weather conditions, such as humidity impact THz pulse propagation. To study these different conditions many precise measurements have been demonstrated in UTOL lab. THz-TDS system has been used to characterize these channels. The absorption model is based on the calculated resonance line absorption (using two line-shape Van Vleck Weisskopf model and Molecular Response Theory) and measured total absorption. After finding the proper absorption and phase model based on the THz propagation in the atmosphere, the THz communication channels were characterized and data rates for seven wireless communication channel have been obtained.
