| Angry rumination (AR) has been linked to aggression; however, research relating AR to crime is scant. Schizotypal personality disorder (SPD) is highly prevalent in criminal populations and those with violent offenses are characterized by more SPD symptoms. The present study was the first to examine the impact of AR and SPD on crime. Participants were administered the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire, the Angry Rumination Subscale of the Displaced Aggression Questionnaire, and the Adult Extension of the National Youth Survey Self-Report Delinquency Measure. SPD moderates the effect of AR on violent and non-violent crime; however, patterns differ. For the low schizotypal group, AR significantly increased both violent and non-violent crime. For the mean schizotypal group, AR also significantly increased both types of crime; however, the effect was only marginal for non-violent crime. Furthermore, for the high schizotypal symptoms group, AR did not significantly impact violent crime, whereas AR marginally decreased non-violent crime. |
