This paper will focus on an exploration of contemporaneous perspectives critically based in art historical texts and innovative neurobiology. By delving into a contemporary understanding of the Cartesian divide between mind and body, this paper will express the degree to which humanity is reconciling its place in the cosmos as materially active beings. The vital agency of the human brain is thus displaced as the apogee of evolutionary biology. The works of Tim Hawkinson and Berlinde De Bruyckere represent different ends of a spectrum that is both interested in and troubled by our ever-changing location in the universe. Through the works of these artists, we are able to explore the unique and differing perspectives of the new embodied human being. |
