Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the development of the Japanese samurai sword from conception until 1945. The literature reviewed came from a variety of sources, including the library of California State University, Long Beach, and the Pacific Asia Museum. Historical investigation was also aided by the Pasadena Oriental Book Store and close communication with Lt. Col. W. D. Harwell, United States Army Retired, private collector and authority on Japanese weaponry.;The study concentrated on history, development of the craft, evolution of the samurai sword, and technology used in methods associated with metallurgy and aesthetic adornment of the sword.;The influence of Asian continental immigration to Japan accelerated Japan's advancements in metallurgy. Japanese swordmakers invented a superior lamination process but quality control became lax with the importation of foreign steels.
