On The Horizontal Development And Translation Of World Literature From Chinese,Japanese And The Original Version Of The Chrysanthemum And The Sword

This paper discusses the horizontal development and the influence that translation has on world literature from the perspective of three language versions of The Chrysanthemum and the Sword.One definition to clarify is "horizontal development":it is the mutual influence,conflict and encounter among various nations around the world(Cao Shunqing).The other definition is "world literature":literature that benefits from translation(Damrosch).There are a lot of definitions about "world literature";the paper listed most of them,but chooses some as the interpretation.Then,the paper discusses the relationship between world literature and politics,history and translation,to lay a theory foundation for the following parts.The main part discusses the horizontal development and the influence of translation strategy of The Chrysanthemum and the Sword.The horizontal development of this book is the arrival in Japan from the US,and the later arrival in China with complicated political and historical reasons.The translation strategies include footnotes-adding,back-translation,transliteration,demonstration,misunderstanding and mistranslation,and literary style.The paper analyzes the influence that these translation strategies taken by different translators have on the development of The Chrysanthemum and the Sword.At last,the paper arrives at the conclusion:an analytical work on a piece of world literature should be done from both language and cultural perspective as well as political,historical,and translational viewpoint.Translation of world literature should be pluralistic and open,therefore translation can further contribute to world literature.
