Abstract/Summary:
This qualifying paper addresses the re-upholstering of a 19th century lounge (or day bed), owned by Olana, State Historic Site, in Hudson, NY. Olana is one of the premiere New York State Historic sites along the upper Hudson River and was once home to the Hudson River School painter Fredric E. Church. Olana is fortunate enough to house many original textiles as well as an extensive archive to aid in the furnishing plans for the first and second floors. Following this furnishing plan was essential when the Curators began furnishing the second floor. This furnishing plan included the addition of a day bed and was the motivation behind the conservation treatment of this day bed and thus this thesis paper.;The project began with a detailed examination report which then determined the proposed treatment. Once the treatment goals were solidified, an in-depth look at previous treatments was implemented to help guide the conservation treatment.;This paper details the research into past treatments, the formulation of the treatment proposal, and ultimately the final treatment of the Olana day bed.
