Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this research is to establish an information framework suited to preparing a Biosphere Reserve proposal that incorporates ecotourism related values and concepts. It illustrates the utility of this framework in the context of the Five-Finger Mountain region of China. The specific objectives of the research are twofold. First it provides a rationale for developing a Biosphere Reserve that incorporates ecotourism components. It does this by conducting a “first stage” analysis of local government officials' visions of tourism development in the region. From their point of view, tourism development can help to protect the region's natural environment, develop the local economy, and conserve local minority cultures. Based on these findings, several recommendations for ecotourism development and management are suggested.; The second objective of this research is to identify the information needed to incorporate ecotourism development components into a comprehensive Biosphere Reserve proposal and management framework for this area.
