Abstract/Summary:
Data reduction and data approximation are important for many scientific and engineering applications in order to render speed and storage space. This thesis is concerned with the approximation of scalar- and vector-valued scattered data in the plane. Two refinement strategies have been presented and implemented in this research work. The refinement of a triangulation terminates when the error associated with the triangulation is zero or smaller than an expected tolerance. The methods presented to this thesis can be applied to the areas of computational fluid dynamics, electromagnetic field simulation, oceanography, atmospheric sciences, and medicine.
