Significant sensor data and processing equipment are available on the numerous vessels at sea at any given time. Vessels use these resources to navigate and make safe passage. Frequently instruments run unattended, radios scan empty airwaves, ship's computers wastefully hum away, and sensors produce streams of data to null. There is no infrastructure for the collection and practical analysis of the available data. Existing marine information systems, such as weather, are macroscopic dealing with long time periods and vast areas. The goal of the Kohola system is to harness the unused resource infrastructure and to collect and reduce sensor data, on demand, into valuable fine-grained information using open interfaces based on state-of-the-art grid and web service technologies. |
