Abstract/Summary:
This study evaluated the relationships of falls between gender, home hazards, and exercises in the geriatric population. In particular, this study focused on who falls more often between the male and female elderly, whether falls led to changes in removing hazards around the home, and finally whether falling led to the elderly starting a physical therapy or an exercise program. This study analyzed data from the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) 2007 and focused on the geriatric population of 65 years of age and above. Results showed that females in general fell more often than males. It also showed that even after a fall due to home hazards, only a small number had increased exercise or therapy programs or changed their home environment to prevent future falls. Possible explanations for the results were discussed.
