Abstract/Summary:
Salivary levels of interleukins (IL)-6, 8 and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) had been reported to be elevated in OLP patients. However, the reported concentrations appeared to vary widely among different studies. In this project, we measured the salivary concentrations of IL-6, 8 and bFGF in our OLP patient population by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and investigated whether fluctuations in the OLP disease activity would influence their concentrations. A significant increase in the salivary IL-6 and IL-8 levels was found in the OLP disease-active group compared to the levels found in the OLP disease-inactive group. However, a significant increase in the salivary bFGF levels was found in the OLP disease-inactive group compared to the levels found in the OLP disease-active group. Differences are noted in the mean salivary levels of these three biomarkers in our study population when compared to the levels found in the previously published studies.
