| This study examines the potential role of computer modelling, visualization and analysis tools (integrated CAD & GIS) in urban design and land use planning. These tools can directly enhance urban design and planning practice, as this study aims to demonstrate.;From an urban design and land use planning perspective, computer tools' widespread development and implementation have not yet been fully realized relative to other industries. Factors such as low visible return on investment, high implementation costs, poor speed and performance qualities, lack of trained personnel, absence of training programs, poor awareness, and poor user-interfaces were found to seriously impact the perception and success of these systems.;Research has also revealed the highly adaptive nature of computer systems and that the critical limitations and implementation problems are being successfully managed. Many viable potential use for CAD tools have been illustrated, especially their realistic visualization capabilities in facilitating dialogue among stakeholders. However, the relative success of these systems will depend on effective implementation.;Creative development of computer technology can be a valuable addition to the arsenal of planning tools. They provide a powerful medium for communicating, promoting, and forwarding new ideas in an open, interactive forum. However, this can only be achieved through monitored legitimate, professional and ethical application. Ultimately, this study provides a foundation to legitimize continued commitment, research, and integration of these tools into Planning and Urban Design, as they may become part of Planners' essential skill set.
