Abstract/Summary:
Ecological infrastructure provides a natural alternative to the traditional system of storm sewers, treatment plants, and concrete structures which are designed to handle urban stormwater runoff. The approach of traditional urban infrastructure is "conveyance," while alternative systems are characterised by attempting to protect and enhance aquatic and terrestrial habitats and operate under the 'design with nature' philosophy. To understand the implications of ecological infrastructure in an urbanised area, this report examines the barriers and challenges of implementing a plan for a sustainable community in the Brentwood Town Centre in the Municipality of Burnaby, British Columbia. The plan was developed in 1997 through a design charrette co-ordinated by Patrick Condon, the James Taylor Chair in Landscape and Liveable Environments at the University of British Columbia.;An evaluative model was developed based on a framework of biophysical, social, economic, and political aspects, in order to analyse the Brentwood plan.
