Abstract/Summary:
At present there are several techniques of retrofitting that are used to increase the capacity of the structures so that these can resist the forces induced by earthquakes. This investigation proposes a new alternative of retrofitting using the material known recycled plastic. Also, proposes a new usage to the plastic wastes that are deposited annually in the landfills.; Experimental tests were carried out to the recycled plastic with the objective to know their behavior under monotonic and cyclic loads. It was found that the recycled plastic has capacity of deformation in compression and a reduction in its ultimate stress, when it was loaded cyclically, do occur. Finally, using the program DRAIN 2DX and incorporating the recycled plastic to the bracings of a typical steel frame, analytical predictions of the seismic response of the frame were made. A reduction in the axial and horizontal forces of the columns was obtained.
