Abstract/Summary:
Evidence suggests that the management of indoor air quality (IAQ) in Canadian school systems is inadequate and the consequences include significant health effects to the children, teachers, and staff who occupy the school buildings. The purpose of this project was to propose a framework for an indoor air quality management system (IAQMS). Specific objectives of this project were to: describe IAQ; study IAQ contaminant sources and health effects; review how IAQ is being managed in American schools; describe international IAQ developments; survey the existing state of IAQ management in Canadian school systems to identify strengths and weaknesses; propose an IAQMS for Canadian school systems; identify the benefits and limitations for establishing an IAQMS; and develop IAQ management recommendations for school systems in Canada.;An IAQMS is proposed to address these IAQ management weaknesses. The IAQMS contains the management elements of: commitment and policy; planning; operational procedures; education; communication, reporting and documentation; and monitoring and reviewing for improvement.
