Abstract/Summary:
Redevelopment of post-industrial sites into urban parks is a rapidly growing area of expertise in the field of landscape architecture. There is a growing public appreciation for former industrial landscapes as sites that, due to their location and character, have the potential for redevelopment as public amenities. Finding creative ways of incorporating a site's past into a new design scheme is central to making this transformation.; The goal of this thesis was to explore the integration of traces of the industrial past into the design of contemporary public parks. The research data was drawn from twelve case studies of parks developed on post-industrial sites in Europe, North America and Australia. The various physical forms within these parks that incorporated a connection to former land use were identified and categorized. The results of this study indicated four basic approaches that were used to address industrial legacy on the examined sites: (1) design by reduction, (2) design by modification, (3) design by expansion, and (4) design by minimum intervention. The resulting decision-making process provides direction in the design of similar post-industrial sites, considering both the site's industrial legacy and the needs of contemporary park users.
