Abstract/Summary:
User adaptive systems make adaptations in order to better suit their users. Systems that focus on education frequently make use of learning style information to inform the adaptation process. However, a large numbers of learning style models exist that do not share a consistent set of definitions, and learning style models often involve complex semantic relationships. These issues make working with learning style based user adaptive systems difficult. This thesis proposes that an ontology of learning style models is an approach to working with learning style models that takes into account these issues. The ontology approach should be able to represent learning style models and provide learning style information in a valid and useful format for learning style based user adaptive systems. This proposal is tested by two experiments which lead to an assessment of the concept's validity and usefulness as well as identifies some potential areas of future work.
