Abstract/Summary:
This research introduces a new approach to compensate for the mutual coupling between the elements of an antenna array. The compensation is undertaken in the context of practical direction of arrival estimation. In this thesis, Matrix Pencil is used to provide an algorithm for a fast, yet accurate DOA estimation. It can estimate directions with great accuracy using only a single time sample. Then, a new mutual coupling compensation method is introduced to account for any mutual coupling affecting the DOA estimation. It is based on the minimum norm solution to an underdetermined system of equations. It works independent of the type of antenna element and provides good results in situations where signal strengths vary considerably. The combination of Matrix Pencil and minimum norm method provides for practical DOA estimation solution with possible real-time applications. We also show that this solution works extremely well in CDMA communication systems.
