The objective of this project is to develop a dual-mode laser source that is designed to generate millimeter-waves through the process of remote heterodyning on a photodetector. In particular, this research is focused on characterizing dual-mode laser sources for implementation in Radio-over-Fiber (RoF) wireless applications. The optical generation of RF signals for use in indoor and pico-cellular RoF wireless networks can reduce system cost and maintenance.;Using a novel double-exposure apodized holographic grating in an external cavity configuration, a narrow linewidth dual-wavelength source is investigated. In addition, a dual-wavelength Semiconductor Fiber-Grating Laser, and a dual-wavelength Semiconductor Ring Laser have been designed, assembled, and tested. The dual-wavelength Semiconductor Fiber-Grating Laser and dual-wavelength Semiconductor Ring Laser use fiber Bragg grating technology specially designed for dual-mode reflection. A comparison of these new laser designs is presented. |
