Abstract/Summary:
This study presents how the state of art video coding technologies is imported to video conferencing system VCLAN. VCLAN is software only video conferencing tools, which incorporates H.263 based video codec, G.723 audio codec, supports real time audio/video communication and provides multipoint conferencing using IP multicast. H.264/AVC is the newest video compression standard of the ITU-T Video Coding Expert Group (VCEG) and the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Groups (MPEG). H.264/AVC has achieved a significant improvement in video compression efficiency, a factor of two in bit rate-saving when compared with existing standards such as MPEG-2 Video. In this thesis, some major features of H.264 video compression algorithm are compared and imported to VCLAN system, so that a new video codec for video conferencing is formed. The new video codec fits into the framework of VCLAN and acquires 2--3dB PSNR gain when compared to the original video codec used in VCLAN and shows subjective video quality improvement.
