Abstract/Summary:
Mass media has been acknowledged as one of the most important variables in the democratic configuration of a country. In the case of Mexico, researchers have agreed that Mexican print media have the potential to shape a more participative democratic process. However, media commercialization may threaten this potential and hinder possibilities for promoting a more participative society. This qualitative study addressed the changes (or lack thereof) in journalistic values in print media since the consolidation of the electoral transition of 2000, specifically focusing in the willingness of media to promote civic participation. In order to analyze this issue, legal document research, a qualitative content analysis of national newspapers, and in-depth interviews with editors of the newspapers were conducted. The research suggested that while print media does maintain a civic approach and shows willingness to promote participation, there is an underlying concern that an increase of economic control over the print media poses a threat to the continuation of this trend.
